Title
Experimental system for the study of planetary surface materials’ BRDF
Abstract
An optimized spectrophoto‐goniometer was designed to study the Bidirectional Reflectance and Polarization Distribution Functions (BRDF and BPDF) of several types of materials such as minerals, salts and molecular solids (called “ices”) existing on the surfaces of solar system icy satellites. It covers the solar spectrum (λ ε [0.3, 5 μm]) and a wide range of geometric configurations. Using this device we hope to achieve an improved understanding of BRDF and BPDF behaviors of granular surfaces and a validation of current radiative transfer models. Description of both spectral and photometrical calibration protocols and initial results on water ice and sulfur powder are presented.
